"A Struggle For Inter-Caste Marriage"

It is believed that caste, religion, language, culture, lifestyle, economic and educational conditions cannot be barriers to love.  In the context of Nepal, the issue of caste have been often raised from time to time where there have been cases where true love has been separated in that regard however on the hindesight there are many examples of true love succeeding. 24-year-old Suman Magrati of Morang Biratnagar-5 and local 20-year-old Urmila Khatiwada had to struggle to materialize their relationship. Suman and Urmila vowed to be one forever  at the Budhasubba temple in Dharan on 23rd February 2070 . And shortly after that, they were recognized by the court as an inter-caste married couple.

After finally establishing their long-standing relationship into their marriage, suddenly they both disappeared on 17th July 2071.  As soon as Urmila left the house, her father Bhim Prasad Khatiwada filed a complaint with the police stating that the Magrati family had abducted his daughter and Suman's father Keshab Magrati was taken into police custody.  Suman and Urmila, who were in Udaipur, appeared before the police as soon as they got the information that their father was detained by the police because of their marriage.

Even though getting married through the temple and the court, the police forced them to sign the papers entrusting to the family, and Suman was detained while Urmila was sent home with her father.  Suman and Urmila, who appeared before the police, assuming that the police could not separate them because they had established a relationship in the court, but were separatated nonetheless. While Urmila was being taken away by her family, Suman despite being in the police custody could hear her screams claiming she was married to Suman and that she was going with him.  Suman could not bear to just listen and do nothing. With the pressure of Redef Nepal, National Human Rights Commission, and others who are working to defend human rights, Suman was freed from the police and who then submitted a petition to the District Administration Office claiming that his wife was separated from him in the manner of kidnapping.

Suman unexpectedly meets Urmila with the passage of time.  They leave the house again and walk.  Dalbal reached Suman's house in the middle of the night under the leadership of Urmila's father Bhim Prasad, and beat up Suman's father Keshav Bahadur.  The beating at night makes the incident more intense.  Keshav Bahadur filed a police complaint with the request of Redef Nepal, an organization working in the field of Dalit rights.  After the complaint, the police arrested Urmila's parents and two uncles and put them in jail.  Bhim Prasad, who went ahead with the plan to file a case of caste discrimination for beating them, was forced to hesitate as Redef Nepal raised tough questions saying that the police did not cooperate.  Urmila's parents and two uncles have been detained for 24 hours, and they promise to let their daughter live comfortably.  After reaching the court and agreeing to accept the marriage of their married daughter easily and let them live together, they are released.

Redef Nepal plays a more important role in completing the social formalities along with the acceptance by the parents of the girls.  On August 9, 2071, a formal social wedding was held between them at Suman's house under the leadership of Redef Nepal in the presence of police administration chief, journalist, rights activist, neighbors and others.  Suman is stunned by his success.  He says that, "Urmila has been tortured a lot for marrying another caste.  It is a big thing for us to come and accept now." They understand that they have succeeded in love because of their true love.  Urmila is also living happily.  Both are continuing their studies.  Suman says, "Though I lived in Biratnagar, I had no contact with anyone.  Access to political and police is unimaginable.  There is no awareness of what to do in times of emergency.  But Redef has worked hard for our success." He says, "Perhaps if Redef Nepal, which works in the field of Dalit rights, had not been established, I would be in jail right now.  Urmila would not have been with me. Urmila, who struggled a lot to get Suman's love, is shocked to get institutional support.  I did not think that even in today's era, there is so much discrimination.  People from my family put a stop to it.'' She says, 'If it wasn't for an organization called Redef, we probably wouldn't have been together."  They have a vow to teach others to fight in the field of their rights along with the struggle they had to do.
